Caledonia Australis source their grapes from vines grown in the well known terroir of Leongatha in Gippsland. Without irrigation and with closely planted vines, the plants extend their roots deep beneath the soil. The vineyards are based on iron stone soils on free draining, North Eastern facing slopes. Mark Matthews crafts beautifully balanced and intriguingly complex wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Not surprisingly, he is described as one of the top cool climate winemakers in Australia.
The Caledonia Australis Chardonnay is an excellent example of a fresh, but creamy and approachable wine. The nose is pretty with light notes of almonds and white flowers. Richer pastry notes are evident from having spent time of fine lees. The palate is broad and generous with a creamy texture and undertones of white peach and hazelnuts. A strong backbone of acidity enhances the slight mineral notes.
The Caledonia Australis Chardonnay is an ideal match to richer seafood dishes, and also to white meat dishes such as roast chicken.
