Clos du Marquis was once a part of Leoville Las Cases and now it is their second label. Created in the late 1800’s, Clos du Marquis was the first ‘second wine’ of a great Bordeaux Chateau. This is common today, allowing the estates to produce more affordable everyday wines. Although second wines are generally considered inferior to premium wines, Clos du Marquis is considered to be of better quality than many prestigious labels.
As with other regions on the left-bank, 2005 was a fabulous vintage for Saint Julien. The wines have an outstanding concentration of aromas with great palate depth and finesse. Clos du Marquis shows ripe aromas of raspberry, blackberry and mineral with liquorice and tobacco notes. The palate is rich and powerful with concentrated fruits, earth and graphite. It is full bodied and dense in flavour, with chewy tannins and balanced acidity. It is approaching full maturity now, but will keep for several years to come.
This wine is an ideal match to braised beef cheeks or beef short ribs.
