Chateau Calon is comprised of one large 55 hectare vineyard block, surrounded by a large stone wall. This striking feature hails from its ancient roots in the 12th century. The ‘Prince of Vines’, the Marquis de Segur, took over the property in the 18th century and the estate flourished in reputation and prestige.
1998 was a difficult harvest in the Medoc, with rains throughout September. However, a warm and dry summer thickened the skins of the berries, making them more resistant to disease. The top Chateaus managed to produce very good quality wines, despite the weather.
Chateau Calon managed to produce a wine with earthy and truffled complexity, rich in black cherry and plum. The bouquet offers an abundance of herbs which follow though on the palate, paired with smoked game and dusty soil. The oak aromas are mature and well-integrated with layers of velvety tannins. Having been austere in its youth, this wine has now mellowed to be at optimum drinking potential.
1998 Chateau Calon Segur is a delicious match to game and wild mushroom dishes.
