Guill and Sandra de Pury of Yeringberg make wines from low-yielding wines, obtaining an astonishing texture and complexity. Their wines are made from some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley and their estate has gained a tremendous reputation both at home and abroad. After initially being abandoned, Guill and his wife Katherine replanted the old vineyards in 1969 and they have been continuously tended to ever since.
Their 2016 Chardonnay is comparable to that of the finest white Burgundy, but at a fraction of the price. Aromas of ripe nectarine, vanilla and poached pear with lightly toasted oak and hazelnut. The flavours develop into layers of melon, lemon curd and honey with an excellent persistence. The structure is held together with great balanced acidity and the length seems to never end.
This wine deserves to be paired with dishes such as grilled lobster or seared scallops. Another great match would be a rich mushroom and chicken casserole.
