Chateau Guibeau is run by husband and wife Eric and Brigitte, and has been a family business for over a century. The vineyard is fully certified organic and minimal intervention is practiced in the winery. For Eric and Brigitte, the terroir and vintage is the most important features to be imparted on their wines. Based in the small region of Puisseguin-Saint Emilion, their soils are rich in calcareous clay with up to 80 year old vines.
2016 was a very good vintage for the whole of Bordeaux. Pomerol and Saint Emilion, and the surrounds faired well, subsequently producing wines of power and ageing potential. Chateau Guibeau have produced a classic Merlot with fruit sourced from 35 year old vines. With maturation in barrique barrels, the aromas are heavy with spicy cedar, ripe plum, cigar box and blackberry. The palate follows through with ripe fruit flavours and liquorice spice. With fine, grippy tannins and balanced acidity, this wine has great persistence and good palate evolution. Drinks very well now, but will keep maturing for years to come yet.
This wine is excellent with every day dishes such as spaghetti and meatballs. Once fully mature, it will pair very well with eye fillet or porterhouse cooked rare to medium rare.
