The Cannubi region has been shown to have produced wines as early as in 1752. This predates the denomination of Barolo and shows how the people living there knew the soils were well suited for viticulture. With soils formed over 10 million years ago in the tertiary era, there is little wonder the wines are able to obtain such depth and finesse. Brezza has owned and operated their winery and vineyard since 1885. Their wines are made using organic methods and with such attentive care and maintenance even their 70 year old vines have a healthy production.
The 2015 Cannubi Barolo is made with carefully selected grapes and has been matured on cement before being transferred to 3000 lite Slovenian botti for two years. No fining nor filtering take place and further ageing on the bottle take place for at least one year before release. The wine is still young with bright raspberry and cherry, floral notes of violets and hints of tar becoming evident. Sweet clove spice and smokey notes are evident on the palate with some earth staring to shine through. Drink now with a juicy steak for immediate satisfaction or cellar for a further decade or two. Decanting would be recommended.
