Pol Roger is one of the smaller well established Champagne houses and is family owned and run to this day. They have vineyards in excellent locations in the subregion of Valle d’Epernay in Cotes des Blancs. Unlike other larger producers, Pol Roger will hold back the release of new vintages for much longer than normal. Bemusingly, the Queen of England has put her stamp of approval on their products and regularly enjoys a glass.
The Pol Roger Brut 2008 vintage is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Fine, but persistent beads make up the mousse. Rich tangerine and pastry-like aromas spring out of the glass. Citrus, peach and apricot dominate the flavour profile with hints of almonds and toasted biscuit. The body is creamy and full with persistent length.
The 2008 Pol Roger Brut matches well with Swiss Gruyere.
